Goal Setting: Should You Be Reasonable or Go for the Absurd? Part 2 of 2
In part 1 of this 2 part blog post, we talked about goal setting. Should you always set the “safe, reasonable and comfortable goal”? Or should you throw it out the window and go for the absurd?
What would it take to do the latter and what effect would it have on your life? Who would you need to become to make it happen? What would it look like to achieve that kind of success?
If you haven’t already read Part 1, go back and do that now: GOAL SETTING: SHOULD YOU BE REASONABLE OR GO FOR THE ABSURD? PART 1 OF 2
Now…after having read part one let’s move on to some fun stuff.
Are you going to shoot for 10% improvement or a 10X multiplier?
There are times and situations where you should be doing both. Improving just 10% each day means incredible progress over a few months or a year. And applying a 10X multiplier can be a total game-changer.
In most areas of life, we pass through different seasons. Experience, age, circumstances, and our environment all play a part in where we are at in life. At times we need to simply improve 10% to achieve our own measure of Peak Performance.
But other times we need to apply 10X thinking and mentality.
10% vs 10X
It’s time for some journaling. Spend a few minutes in each of the following areas. Give more attention to the area where you want to see the most improvement.
- Business and Career
- Finances and Cashflow (short and long term)
- Health and Fitness (including mental and emotional health)
- Family, Friends and Relationships
- Personal Development (growth, learning, self-improvement, expansion)
Ask yourself two questions for each of the areas above.
#1. What is already going really well in this part of my life that I could just tweak a bit (10%) to achieve an even better result? How could I do this and by when?
#2. What needs a total revamp? What isn’t working well and where can I apply 10X thinking and mentality?
To get the creative juices flowing here are some examples of 10% vs 10X thinking. Neither is right or wrong. These examples are just to help you get creative.
Donating to Charity: 10% Give $1,000 to my favorite charity this year. 10X: Give $10,000 in cash and spend a week or two doing volunteer work with them in a developing country.
Business: 10%: Grow my client base by 10% in one year. 10X: Grow my client base by 100% in 6 months and take one day off per week to devote to my family. Use the extra profits to invest in cash flow businesses.
Health and Fitness: 10%: Lose 5 lbs in 2 months to fit back into my favorite jeans. 10X: Lose 5 lbs of fat in 2 months while adding 2 lbs of muscle, lower my stress level by 50% and compete in my first triathlon all in the next 6 months.
Family: 10%: Take my family on a well deserved 1 week cruise in the Caribbean. 10X: Take my family on a two month trip around the world and expose them to several different cultures, languages and lifestyles.
Just for fun think how you could 10X your goals to make them bigger and reach them faster. Maybe they won’t be reasonable. Maybe they will be absurd. But how would your life change it you actually succeeded?
